'The Bacchae' - Edinburgh Fringe 2007

Having seen Alan Cumming in the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of Bacchae last week, I wanted to see this version by Black and White Rainbow to compare. I really enjoyed it. The simple staging, effective lighting and Simon Evans’ performance as Pentheus was brilliant. The clever adaptation and direction (again by Simon Evans) transforms Dionysus into an illusionist, and was a refreshing way of looking at this old, but relevant lesson. Miles Bullock’s Dionysus was totally different to Cumming’s camp and golden kilted transsexual, and again was very powerful especially in his scenes with Pentheus.
